Roughly circular in shape, Kauai is 550 square miles in area and 32 miles in diameter. With little public transportation, rental cars are recommended, but getting around on Kauai is easy. Kauai's roads almost encircle the entire coastline only to stop at the formidable Na Pali Coast where building roads would be impossible. The breathtaking steep green cliffs of Na Pali provide a natural barrier, limiting access to one of the world's most awe-inspiring and primeval places to those walking, on helicopter or traveling via boat.

Though Kauai's climate is tropical, it actually consists of many distinct microclimates, including sunny dry areas, lush river valleys, temperate foothills and high mountain rain forests. Most of the year, temperatures on Kauai range in the 70s, with winter nighttime lows in the 60s. Summers on Kauai bring daytime temperatures in the mid-80s and nighttime lows in the 70s. Even in the middle of Kauai's summer, the nearly constant gentle trade winds create a cool balmy climate instead of the oppressive heat common to other tropical destinations.

It is said that when legendary golfer and architect Jack Nicklaus created the Kiele Course at Kauai Lagoons, the terrain lent itself so well to his vision that he made but a single change to his original design. Little wonder that this incredible par 72 resort course — one of two award-winning Nicklaus layouts at Kauai Lagoons — continues to receive accolade after accolade for being one of the finest golf gems in the Pacific.

Overlooking the gateway to the island of Kauai in Hawaii, Kauai Lagoons is a lush, 750-acre resort carefully secluded in the southwest corner of the island. Kauai Lagoon's Mokihana Course

The Mokihana Course is the second Jack Nicklaus course at Kauai Lagoons. The courses is a 6,900 yard par 72 resort layout crafted with Scottish style rolling links. Previously the Lagoons Course, the layout underwent a soft renovation in its landscaping and was renamed in 1999 to pay tribute to its Hawaiian heritage. Designed for players of all skill levels, the course is marked by its open fairways and, compared with its more demanding sister course, by its relative lack of forced carries. The real challenge of the Mokihana are its undulating greens, which will challenge the best of putters. The Mokihana has been rated by Golf Magazine as one of the ten most playable in America, and proffers outstanding views of Mt. Waialeale, the extinct volcano that created the island of Kauai. Its more hospitable nature is a perfect complement to the more challenging Kiele.

Listed in the top 50 resort courses and the top 100 courses in America, this course is a special treat for golfers. The course is made up of three unique nine holes of golf. The Ocean Nine runs right along the ocean, while the Lakes Nine meanders around a beautiful lake, and the Woods Nine finds its way through the resort's native woodlands.

Golf Digest lists the Princeville Makai Course in its Top 50 Resort Courses, and has included it in "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses" for 16 consecutive years. The Makai is really three courses in one: the Ocean Nine - venturing closest to the Pacific, the Lakes Nine - winding its way around serene lakes and the Woods Nine - diverting its way through native woodlands.

Beginning your golf journey on the first tee, a par-5 that promotes strategy, you'll find the tranquility of the golf course wrapping its way around your swing. Moving through to the fourth hole, you'll experience views of the lush Hao and Ironwood trees. The spectacular eighth hole will take your breath away with snapshots of a small pond below the tee and the rolling green lying beyond.
